Tropical Cyclone Intensity and Structure Changes in relation to Tropical Cyclone Outflow
نویسنده
چکیده
The overarching objective of this project is to identify impacts to tropical cyclone structure and intensity throughout the tropical cyclone lifetime. A common factor is the impact of midand upperlevel environmental conditions that affects formation and intensification of a tropical cyclone. It is hypothesized that during the formation process, the environmental interaction has maximum impact on the vertical alignment of the fledgling circulation and as a mature tropical cyclone impacts on upperlevel outflow control periods of intensification or decay. Observational data of the tropical cycloneenvironment at upper levels are used in conjunction with numerical simulations to examine the spatial and temporal sensitivities that result in tropical cyclone intensification versus decay, and the mechanisms via which the environmental interaction influences the tropical cyclone primary swirling wind circulation at various stages of intensification.

Understanding Impacts of Outflow on Tropical Cyclone Formation and Rapid Intensity and Structure Changes with Data Assimilation and High-resolution Numerical Simulations
Understanding the processes that contribute to tropical cyclone (TC) formation, intensity and structure changes is essential for improving the predictability of TCs. Previous studies have focused mostly on the lowto mid-level processes leading to TC formation and rapid intensity and structure changes. The influence of upper-level atmospheric processes, especially the evolution of the outflow la...

Recent research to increase understanding, and techniques to improve forecasts, of the structure and structural changes of a tropical cyclone due to interaction with the environment are summarized. The atmospheric environment is considered here, and the oceanic, and air-sea interface environments are summarized in Topic 1.3. Progress in understanding how a tropical cyclone interacts with its en...

A question remains among the scientific community in the context of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity prediction: will an approaching upper-tropospheric synoptic-scale trough produce intensification or decay of a given TC? Many observational studies and numerical modeling have documented TC-trough interaction. Hanley et al. (2001) introduced the “good trough/bad trough” terminology to sort trough...

Improve our understanding of the physical processes by which (a) 3-D environmental shears, in particular the low-level meridional shear and upper-level vertical shear affect inner core structure and intensity, and (b) the mesoscale vortices, outer spiral rainbands, inner spiral rainbands, and the eyewall interact and affect TC development and intensity change. General questions to be addressed ...
